A salsa orchestra named after a street
A house in Teusaquillo, a dance floor and a familiar film theme.
The story
Sergio and Santiago Mejía began a salsa project in a house on Calle 33, in Bogotá’s Teusaquillo district. The address became the name of their orchestra: La-33. They rehearsed there before taking their music to the city’s bars.
One early number took Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme and gave it a mambo arrangement. “La Pantera Mambo” appeared on the orchestra’s 2004 debut album.
A report from 2006 recalls the orchestra persuading the owners of Quiebra Canto to host a night in late 2003. The group had previously played friends’ parties, fairs and weddings. At the bar, its mambo arrangement found a dance floor.
La-33’s biography points to the sound of 1970s New York Latin music as an influence. Its name, meanwhile, returns to the house in Teusaquillo where the musicians rehearsed.
